Chapter 4

Our fourth summer as the stewards of the Horton Bay General Store is fast approaching. February is the month we start the bulk of planning and purchasing. The truth is, it's been a bumpy start to the year, and I've found myself appreciating the simplicity of life up north more than usual. It felt important to step back and look at how to deepen the sense of community that this magical little spot called Horton Bay brings to so many. It has sent me down a bit of a rabbit hole on the importance of “third places” in our communities.

Are you familiar with what a "third place" is and how it serves building connection? Third places are described as locations that facilitate social interaction outside of the people you live or work with and encourage “public relaxation.” They are places where you encounter “regulars,” or frequenters of a space, as well as potential new connections.

Ok, you had me at public relaxation. It goes hand in hand with our live slow vibe.

With that in mind, here are a few things to know about visiting the Horton Bay General Store.

Everyone is welcome.

There's no rush.

There's no policy requiring you to make a purchase to hang out on the front porch or back patio.

There will be several events this summer that are free and intentional to foster community and connection.

Think euchre night, bring your favorite vinyl happy hour and other shenanigans.

This sketch of the store is by Elise Brown, a friend of our daughter Camille from her freshman year in college. The stories and connections that our family members receive from our time at the general store immediately transcend to our friends in other parts of the country and world. People are craving the sense of community, connection and conversation that comes from the power of the place in a hamlet like Horton Bay.

This summer we invite you to come live slow with us

Molly McCoy & Greg Cummings

Follow along on social for hours, events, specials, new offerings and of course, shenanigans!
